Maranatha Memories

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Alumni Day at Maranatha Baptist University is, as always, about memories and about family.

This year's Alumni Weekend celebrations were no exception, and returning alumni experienced encouraging reunions with old friends, the sharing of memories, and the inevitable smack talk around the main events of Saturday: the anticipated Alumni vs Sabercats matchups.

It was "quality over quantity" for the Alumni teams this year, as numerous national champions and All-Americans made their way to the contests in an effort to take down the 2019 Sabercats teams. Like last year, two of the three alumni squads came away with the win, as the Men's Soccer alumni team and the Women's Soccer alumnae (with some help from current players) both had two-goal wins in the lighthearted scrimmages.

Women's Volleyball (Alumnae 1-3 Sabercats - 21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 10-25)

The Women's Volleyball alumnae produced a high-powered squad that reflects the excellence of the program that Regina DeLozier has crafted over the last 13 seasons. Of the nine graduates, three were former NCCAA All-Americans while many of the rest received outstanding recognition or were members of a national championship team:

2019 Alumnae: WVB            Notable
Julie Allweil
Danielle Coleman
Ali Crum NCCAA National Player of the Year (x2)
Pam Fiocchi NCCAA 2nd-Team All-American
Julia Gibson AD3I 1st-Team All-Independent
Emily Mowry GP4L Winner: Women's Volleyball
Stacy Rueb  NCCAA 1st-Team All-American
Erin Steuerwald
Hallie Sheley
(Coach) Torey Rosen NCCAA National Player of the Year (x2)

The women's volleyball scrimmage is typically a four-set scrimmage regardless of scores, as both squads rotate their players throughout the match. In a mirrored scoreline from last year, the Sabercats took home a 3-1 win.

Women's Soccer (Alumnae 5-3 Sabercats)

The women's soccer scrimmage was a goal-fest, as the two teams seemed to score every good chance they had. Alexis Sponable netted a hat-trick for the Sabercats while Alyssa Wright (2), Ali Hernandez, Julie Roer, and Olivia Rogers all contributed goals for the Alumnae.

The Alumnae "recruited" some current student-athletes to round out their squad, which consisted of the following people:

Julie Allweil NCCAA 1st-Team All-American
