STORY

The emotions in the Maranatha gym were high at the start of the game on Saturday. Not only was it the last home game for this year's seniors, but it was also the last home game for Coach Delozier, who announced her retirement earlier this season.

The Eagles showed the Sabercats no sympathy at the start of set one. Having just lost to Maranatha (3-0) the night prior, Faith came out swinging hard and Maranatha was not mentally ready for it. After a service ace and 4 quick kills, the Eagles took an early 5-1 lead. But freshman Delaney Thompson was not going to let the Sabercats go down without a fight. With 6 kills, she put her team back into the game, tying things up 12-12.

The Maranatha fans erupted with every blowing attack from Thompson and the Sabercats were able to play off that energy. They took a late lead (17-16) and never gave it back. They finished off Faith 25-19 in set 1. Thompson finished the first set with 9 kills.

In the next set, Maranatha turned the table on Faith. It was the Sabercats that jumped to an early lead (7-2). The Sabercat attackers had warmed up since the first match and kills were noted for Johnson, Bumpus, A. Henkel, K. Henkel, Thompson, and Woller. It was Bumpus that led at the net this set, adding 5 more kills to her stats. The Sabercats took down the Eagles 25-14 in set 2.

The third set was a nail-biter all the way through, as both teams remained neck and neck. Faith was able to take a late lead at 22-20. At this point, Coach DeLozier called a time-out. The Sabercats came back from the short breather and tied things up with a kill from Bumpus and Thompson. It was then Faith who took a time out, but it would do them no good. Mattie Bumpus took the game into her own hands, slamming down 3 kills to finish the match...and her last game on the Maranatha court.
