Sabercats Battle, Fall to Titans at Home

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- The Sabercats were unfazed in their opening half against WIAC heavyweights UW-Oshkosh, but eventually saw the game slide away in the Titans' favor to the tune of 58-75. Wes Wagner led the Sabercats with 12 points and four rebounds on the night.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 58-75 Titans
  • Venue: MBU Gymnasium
  • Attendance: 404
  • Sabercats: now 1-6, Titans: now 4-3

How it Happened

  • 1st Half
  • Jonathan Book helped the Sabercats stay tight with the Titans early on, as the Californian put up four points early. Overall, the Sabercats were sharper at the start, as they challenged the favorited Titans through the better part of the first half by shooting over 50 percent from the field.
  • The Sabercats were persistent, as Book found the holes inside to post six in the first half while Tyree Bearden led the team with eight. But the Titans' smooth shooting kept the edge intact for the visitors.
  • Rob Sonnenberg's three made it a two-possession game with just under two minutes left, but the Titans had the final say with a three-pointer of their own to take a seven-point lead into halftime. (34-41)
  • 2nd Half
  • After a cagey start to the second half from both teams, the Titans began to edge away as they continued their successful three-point shooting while the Sabercats struggled in possession early in the second half.
  • Wes Wagner did his senior best to keep the game close, as the Houston native put up eight points in the half.
  • The second half of the 20-minutes yielded very little change in the storyline - the Titans punished the Sabercats' 11 turnovers while maintaining their effectiveness from beyond the arc. As the clock wound down, the Titans' score increased, and the visitors took home a 58-75 win. (58-75)
  • Overall, the Sabercats shot an improved 51.9 percent from the field.
  • The Titans put up 42 of their 75 points from beyond the three-point line.

From Coach Keith

"First of all, I want to Congratulate Coach Pat (Juckem) and the fact that Oshkosh are picked to be number one in the WIAC this year - it's for a good reason. We were fortuntate to come out and put out a good effort. Oshkosh couuld be the top Division III program in the state, and we battled them.  I was proud that our guys gave the effort tonight. Hopefully we have - at least psychologically - found our identity in the way we play. We came out with an impressive effort, and we are hoping to do that every night."

Up Next

  • The Sabercats will travel to Dubuque, Iowa to face the Eagles of Emmaus Bible College on Thursday for a 7:00 PM tip.
