Sabercats Click in NCCAA Win Over Faith Baptist

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- The Sabercats were firing on all cylinders in a crowd-pleasing 88-72 win over the Eagles of Faith Baptist Bible College this afternoon. Zach Terpstra (double-double) and Tyree Bearden (17 points) highlighted the box score, which had six Sabercats recording double-digit points on the night.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 88-72 Eagles
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Attendance: 350
  • Sabercats: now 3-6, Eagles: now 6-2

How it Happened

  • 1st Half
  • Bearden wasted no time, and scored more than half of his 17 points in the opening 90 seconds. The Texan knocked down two shots from downtown and added a layup for good measure to put the Sabercats out to an opening 8-2 lead.
  • The Eagles then wreaked havoc by going on an 18-0 run to take control of the game. The opening tradeoff triggered a wild first half, which saw the lead change hands just twice, but through significant momentum swings. The Sabercats answered the 18-0 run with a 13-2 run of their own, and eventually earned the lead back when Micah Shepard knocked down a pair of free throws with 2:28 on the clock.
  • The Sabercats eventually took the 34-30 lead into the break. Bearden was the primary threat with 11 points, and Micah Shepard (eight points) and Clayton Morrison (seven points) came off the bench and combined for nearly half of the Sabercats' total. (34-30)
  • 2nd Half
  • The Sabercats did not let go of that lead that they took back, as they eventually held on to win comfortably in the second act.
  • Jonathan Book, Bearden, and Richard Medina brought the crowd to their feet with some electric finishes from inside in the early goings, and the Sabercats rode that momentum through the duration of the second 20 minutes, displaying some well-balanced attack and stingy defense.
  • The Sabercats jumped out to a 26-point lead - their largest of the night - when Bearden layed it in with 6:46 on the clock. (77-51)
  • Staunch defending from Wes Wagner helped keep the momentum in Maranatha's favor. Wagner finished his noteworthy night with three blocks, five boards, and 16 points to keep the Sabercats on track.
  • Kiandrecus Broussard made his Sabercat debut and scored his first collegiate points after earning a pair of free throws.
  • It was smooth sailing for the Sabercats, who went deep into their bench to finish out the well-earned, 16-point win. (88-72)

Extras

  • Bearden, Terpstra, Wagner, Shepard, Medina, and Morrison all finished in double-figures for the points category.
  • For Morrison, this was the first time in double-digit points this season. Wagner's 16 points was a season-high as well.
  • Shepard now has recorded seven games in double digits out of the nine for the season.

From Coach Keith

"Coach Brian Fincham is running a great program at Faith. They have been ranked in the top 10 in the NCCAA for several weeks, and we were fortunate to catch them on a little bit of an off-night. They play hard, they play well together, and we were fortunate enough to win. We had a lot of guys step up for us, and that was huge. We were able to out-shoot and out-rebound them, so we had some things really run in our favor. I'm excited about where we are headed, and if we can take this attitude into the rest of the season, I am excited to see what we can do."
