Salscheider Earns 50th Win as Sabercats Top Eagles

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- After the winter break, the Sabercats dominated their first game back, as they defeated the Dayspring Bible College Eagles by a comfortable scoreline of 90-59. This was the 50th win for head coach Keith Salscheider, and the Sabercats started the 2017 portion of the season with a win while having five players in double-figure points. Micah Shepard led all scorers with 27 points and eight boards on the day.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 90-59 Eagles
  • Location: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Attendance: 162
  • Sabercats: now 4-7, including a 3-3 record at home

How it Happened

  • 1st Half
  • The Sabercats essentially led the game start to finish, as they responded to two opening points from the visitors by regaining the lead without a second backward glance.
  • The first half was marked by a significant shooting difference, as the Sabercats shot 54 percent from the field while the Eagles made just eight of their 36 shots.
  • Shepard and Jonathan Book teamed up to spark the offensive momentum for MBU. Both players hit double-figure points in the first half, registering 16 and 10 points respectively.
  • Two free throws from the Eagles brought the visitors back to within two points, but that was the closest that Dayspring would come for the remainder of the contest.
  • Shepard continued to lead the charge for MBU, and two free throws from Zach Terpstra with less than a second on the clock gave the Sabercats a 20-point lead entering halftime. (46-26)
  • 2nd Half
  • The Sabercats maintained the comfortable lead throughout the second half, and showed their depth through a variety of contributors. Adam Love earned his first points of the season with an athletic layup, and CJ Jones (10 points) led the bench contributions by playing 20 minutes and shooting four for seven from the field.
  • Joining Shepard on the offensive end were Wes Wagner (17 pts) and Terpstra (11 pts). Wagner was a consistent performer for MBU in the second half, as the senior posted 14 of his points in the closing 20 minutes.
  • The Sabercats maintained their intensity throughout the second act to close out the game with a 30-plus point victory. (90-59)
