Jacks Stymie Sabercats up North
ASHLAND, Wis. --- The Jacks of Northland College proved to be too much to handle for the Sabercats, as the hosts rode the momentum of superior three-point shooting to capture an 82-62 win over the Sabercats on a cold night in Ashland, Wis.
The Basics
- Result: Sabercats 62-82 Jacks
- Venue: Chapple Family Gymnasium; Northland College
- Attendance: 112
- Sabercats: now 4-8, Jacks: now 7-8
How it Happened
- 1st Half
- Jonathan Book went down in the first minute with an injury, which threw off the Sabercats' game plan right from the start. Richard Medina replaced the injured Book and proved to be effective with nine points, but the Jacks were able to capitalize on the Sabercats altered game plan early on.
- Clayton Morrison gave the Sabercats their only lead of the night just 18 seconds into the game, as the Jacks never looked back after regaining the lead at the 19-minute mark.
- The Sabercats played the Jacks evenly enough all-around, but they struggled from downtown in the first half. Just one shot fell for the Sabercats after 10 tries from distance.
- Micah Shepard led MBU in the first half with a dozen points and was backed up by seven from Clayton Morrison. The duo were the majority of the Sabercats' offense, who managed just 23 points in the first half. (23-47)
- 2nd Half
- The Sabercats improved their three-point game by shooting 3-8 in the second half, but the Jacks ultimately out-scored MBU by 18 points from three-point range, which was a key influencer of the game's result.
- The Sabercats went deep into their bench in the second half, and Medina and Bryce Cashner were the main scoring contributors. The pair combined for 15 points in the second half while Matt Gill grabbed six boards from off the bench.
- The story of the second half was more favorable for the Sabercats, as they out-scored the Jacks 39-35 through the final 20 minutes. However, the late efforts were not enough to erase the significant first-half deficit, and the Sabercats fell by 20 when the horn sounded. (62-82)
From Coach Keith
"I want to give coach Scott [Sorenson] a lot of credit - he's got a good group of seniors and he has them playing well. We had an injury to Jonathan Book in the first minute and he was out for the entire game, which took the wind out of our sails. Then Northland played a very good and tough game, and that one-two punch really caught us. Overall we played well, but not up to our full potential."
