Sabercats Stay Close, Fall in Lakeland Doubleheader

PLYMOUTH, Wis. --- As has been the case many times this season, the Sabercats suffered losses by four runs or less as they fell in a doubleheader at Lakeland University this afternoon by scores of 1-5 and 5-8. With the results of today, the Sabercats fall to a deceiving 1-10 while the Muskies improve to 7-9 for 2017.

Wes Wagner and Adam Courtney were credited with the losses while Mason Pechy and Dylan Royce picked up the wins for the hosts.

MBU seemed to be still riding the momentum of their storybook comeback in Minnesota last weekend, as they quickly put their first two batters on base. Following a Caleb Courtney walk, Caleb Prigge extended his hitting streak to five games with a single, and Jordan Garrison brought Courtney home three batters later. Prigge was ultimately stranded 90 feet away, but the Sabercats had a 1-0 lead and momentum to start the game. (1-0)

The lead would be short-lived, as the Muskies took the lead with a two-run bottom of the first inning. The Muskies utilized heads-up baserunning to announce their response and take the lead after the first inning. (1-2)

The Muskies did not stop there, and with two down in the bottom of the second, the Muskies' danger man Travis Regalado singled up the middle to drive in a run and give Lakeland an insurance policy. (1-3)

From then on out, the Sabercats were hard-pressed to gain offensive momentum, as Royce went the distance while limiting the Sabercats to just three hits on the afternoon.

The Muskies did their final damage in the bottom of the sixth. Caleb Courtney came in to pitch and inherited a bases-jammed, no-out scenario and retired three straight batters, but the Muskies did enough to bring in two runs as Courtney wound up with a no-decision appearance. (1-5)

In the second game of the day, the Muskies posted two runs over the opening three innings, but the Sabercats responded with a three-run top of the fourth. It all came with two outs, but the Sabercats took advantage of Muskie miscues to respond authoritatively and take a one-run lead. (3-2)

The Muskies showed that their ability to respond was no fluke, as they promptly registered three runs of their own. It took some help from the Sabercats, however, as two errors from MBU aided the Muskies' scoring efforts. (3-5)

In their next at-bat, the Muskies added three more runs to take control of the game. The hard-hitting hosts drove in three runs to the tune of four hits in the bottom of the fifth. (3-8)

The Sabercats hinted at another unlikely comeback in their final at-bat, as a single from freshman Caleb Huthmaker was followed two batters later with an RBI single from Jordan Garrison. Dennis Reinhardt drove in another run with an RBI single, but the rally would stop there. After seven more innings in Plymouth, the Sabercats had seen their seventh loss this season end with a margin of four runs or less. (5-8)

Jordan Garrison led the MBU offense with one run, three hits, and two RBIs on the day.

The Sabercats will now look to a four-game series with Illinois Tech. this Friday and Saturday in Chicago. The all-AD3I series will begin at 3:00 p.m. Friday at IIT before finishing the first DH at Chicago State University at 7:00 p.m. For live coverage, game information, and more visit mbusabercats.com.
