Sabercats Split Home Opener with Trojans

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- The Sabercats made the most of their first game at their home field, as they beat the Trinitry International Trojans 2-1 in a pitchers' duel before falling 0-5 to the Trojans in game two at Washington Park.

Dennis Reinhardt went the distance in game one while holding TIU to just three hits, and he picked up his first win on the season to move to 3-4 in his Sabercat career.

In game one, the Sabercats continued their trend of scoring early, as they did their damage right out of the gate. Caleb Courtney was hit by a pitch, then advanced to second off of his brother Adam's single. Two batters later, Caleb Courtney was brought home on a sacrifice from Wes Wagner, then Micah Shepard had an RBI single down the left field line to drive in Jordan Garrison. (2-0)

Enter Reinhardt, who kept the Sabercats in front through seven tireless innings of work. Reinhardt struck out the side in the top of the second, and retired 13 straight batters through the middle innings. The Trojans managed to give Reinhardt a scare in the seventh, as Joel Stephenson brought in a run with runners on the corners. With the go-ahead run in scoring position, Reinhardt remained cool and retired the final Trojan to secure the win for MBU. (1-2)

Caleb Prigge went 2-2 in the first game while Shepard and Wagner added RBIs.

In the second game, Trinity International's Zach Nolan stole the headlines, as he pitched a complete game and registered a shutout. It was another pitchers' duel in game two, as Nolan and Adam Courtney went at it through five scoreless innings.

Adam Courtney and Elijah may were the only Sabercats to record a hit. May's was a deep double to left which hit the fence hard, but the two hits could not be converted to runs for the hosts.

The Trojans finally broke through in the sixth, as they produced big hits at key times to score three runs in the at-bat. Michale Balistreri recorded an RBI double to lead the Trojan charge, and the visitors added two more runs in the seventh to cap off the win. (0-5)

Nolan recorded six strikeouts and no walks while allowing the Sabercats just two hits.

MBU returns to action tomorrow when they face the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in Milwaukee at 2:00 p.m.
