Resilient Red Lions Top Sabercats in Doubleheader

LINCOLN, Ill. --- It was the same unwelcome story for the Sabercats, as they fell in yet another one-run game before dropping game two 12-1 to the Lincoln Christian University Red Lions. With the losses, the Sabercats fall to 2-25 on the year.

Clint Matheis and Adam Courtney were handed the losses on the afternoon.

Game one was a pitchers' duel, as the two teams combined for just five runs off of 10 hits. Wes Wagner's double in the second inning brought home Elijah May, then a sacrifice fly from Caleb Huthmaker brought Wagner home two batters later.

The lead would hold there until the bottom of the sixth, when the Red Lions showed their stuff by posting two runs to regain the lead. LCU put two runners in scoring position with no one out, then brought their leadoff hitters home through a sacrifice fly and a base hit to right. MBU put in a valiant effort to tie it up in their final chance, but after leading off with a single, Micah Shepard was ultimately stranded 90 feet away. (2-3)

The Red Lions' bats were alive and well in game two, which was a game of momentum. LCU posted big innings in the second and fifth, as they scored six runs in frame two and six in the fifth inning. Lincoln Christian utilized 13 hits in the game to score their 12 runs, and their defense shut out the Sabercats until the seventh inning.

It was then that Caleb Huthmaker and Jordan Garrison produced the consolation run for MBU, as Huthmaker laced a triple to left field on an 0-2 count, and was promptly brought home with a sacrifice fly from Garrison. (1-12)

Wagner recorded two doubles and an RBI on the day while Garrison and Huthmaker each drove in a run.

MBU will look to close out the season on a winning note, as they host three doubleheaders next week. But first, they will travel to Mequon, Wis. to take on the Falcons of Concordia University-Wisconsin (NACC). The nine-inning game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Monday.
