Tight Raider Pitching Tames Hard-Charging Sabercats in Doubleheader

FRANKLIN, Wis. --- The Sabercats' frustrations continued at the hands of the MSOE Raiders this afternoon, as MBU dropped two games by scores of 0-14 and 3-5. Wes Wagner and Adam Courtney took the losses for MBU.

Once again, the Sabercats were handed a loss of four runs or less, marking the 11th time this season that MBU could have tied the game with one swing of the bat. With the loss, the Sabercats fall to a deceptive 1-16 on the year.

In game one, MSOE scored early and often, as their defense frustrated the Sabercats. The Raiders posted at least one run in every inning in the opening game at The Rock Complex. Nick Gross (3 H, 4 RBI) and Owen Burnikel (2 H, 3 RBI) were the main threats for the hard-hitting Raiders.

The Raiders played three pitchers in the game. Brandon Rankila earned the win after going five innings and conceding just one hit.

Adam Courtney was the only one who got the better of Rankila, as the senior third-baseman posted two hits in the game. (0-14)

The second game was a pitchers' duel, as Courtney and MSOE's Nathan Tremore went at it in the opening innings. Both team's pitchers allowed just eight hits combined in the opening five and a half innings, making it a tightly-contested outing.

The last two innings yielded the bulk of the scoring. After MSOE posted a lone run in the bottom of the second, they padded their lead with a four-run showing in the sixth. After heads-up baserunning and hard hitting from the Raiders, Courtney ended the inning by picking off an eager Joe Gilpin at second base.

The Sabercats started a comeback in the seventh and seemed to be reproducing the magic that they showed in Minnesota a couple of weeks ago. After Caleb Courtney was beaned to force in a run, his brother Adam smacked a double to right field to make it a two-run game. At that point, there was just one long out on the scoreboard as Caleb Prigge had flied out to center field a couple of batters earlier.

The comeback would come up short, however. Jordan Garrison drew a walk and represented the winning run at first base, but the Raiders came through when it mattered to retire the final two Sabercats and get away with the bases jammed. (3-5)

After today, the Sabercats have one more away doubleheader before they open their home games for the season. MBU will travel south of the state's capitol to take on the the Edgewood College Eagles for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader Thursday.
