A Home Sweep: Sabercats On Point in Doubleheader Wins

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- The Sabercats were in peak form today, as they swept the Lincoln Christian University Red Lions, 6-2 and 6-3 in a midday doubleheader at Washington Park. Dennis Reinhardt and Jordan Garrison notched the wins, as the pitching duo both went the distance. Wes Wagner led the offensive charge with a 5-7 effort at the plate, which included six RBIs. Wagner's six-RBI effort brings him to 48 all-time: a Maranatha program record.*

With the win, the Sabercats move to 4-26 on the year and now hold a 23-15 advantage over the Red Lions in the all-time series.

In game one, the Red Lions struck first, as they punished Dennis Reinhardt for "his only bad pitch of the game" (said head coach Gary Garrison). Garrett Aeilts knocked an RBI single which plated Spencer Thomas and Jordan Fredeking to put the Lions ahead. (0-2)

Enter Wagner, who notched his first double and RBI of the day. The Texan bombed one to right-center to bring home Caleb Courtney, who was beaned by Aeilts to start the inning. (1-2)

MBU then spared nothing in the fifth inning, as they posted five runs to take firm control of the lead. Adam Courtney walked in a run, then a Lincoln error (off the bat of Wagner) allowed two MBU runners to score. Jordan Garrison's worm-burner through the right side then brought home Adam Courtney, and a frozen rope to center from Caleb Huthmaker brought home Wagner to wrap up a tidy five-run showing for MBU. (6-2)

Reinhardt remained relentless on the mound to close out the game from that point on. The sophomore continued to frustrate LCU and retired 12 straight batters to seal his second win of the season, and MBU's third. (6-2)

In game two, the Sabercats did the bulk of their damage in their first at-bat. Another RBI double from Wagner pushed Reinhardt and Caleb Courtney across the plate, and a ground-rule double from May quickly plated Wagner as the Sabercats notched consecutive extra-base hits. A tidy hit to right from Garrison then brought home Clint Matheis, who ran for May from second base. (4-1)

Lincoln then made the game interesting with two runs in the third, as they pieced together three hits to record two runs off of Garrison. (4-3)

Senior Caleb Prigge showed his defensive worth in the fifth inning when he notched two gold-glove plays to keep the Red Lions at bay. Garrison quickly added to his strong performance by tallying his second RBI of the game at the bottom of the inning, as he once again singled to right field to bring home Wagner, who had recorded his third and final double. (5-3)

Fittingly, it was Wagner who drove in the final run of the day, as he singled to shortstop to bring home Reinhardt from third. Wagner rounded off his day with his sixth RBI, and the Sabercats had their overdue series sweep. (6-3)

"It was really good to finish a couple of games," said a pleased Gary Garrison at the end of the day. "We have been in that situation many times and let it get away from us. It's nice to put the wraps on a couple of them. It sets us up for the weekend series with Finlandia - our bullpen will be strong. In game one, I thought Dennis was in command the whole way, and I would be remiss if I did not mention Wes's 5-7 day."

The Sabercats will look to wrap up the season with two more doubleheaders, as they will face the Finlandia University Lions this weekend. The first of those games will be Friday, April 28 at 3:00 p.m.
