Wallis Named Pizza Hut Student-Athlete of the Month
WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Derek Wallis was the man to watch for the Sabercats Men's Volleyball Team in March, and the junior has been named as the Pizza Hut student-athlete of the month.
The junior out of Westwood Baptist recorded a team-best 112 kills in 37 sets in March, and he reached double-digit kills in 5 different matches. A high point for Wallis was a 20-kill showing in only 3 sets against Adrian early in the month. Wallis also had a 3-match streak in which he recorded 12 kills or more. Wallis was the undisputed offensive MVP for the Sabercats, as he had either the most or was tied for the most kills in every match last month.
On the team's trip to the Mideast during spring break, Wallis led the team to 2 hard-fought wins against New Jersey City and Widener. Wallis slammed down 14 kills against NJCU and followed that up with a 19-kill outing against Widener.
To wrap up the month, Wallis was credited with 7 kills against Benedictine, who ranks #5 in the NCAA DIII.
Wallis finished the month with 3.03 kills/set and 2.03 digs/set, and he leads the team with 258 kills this season.
Wallis and the Sabercats have but 1 match left, as they will conclude their inaugural intercollegiate varsity season at Greenville University this weekend. The season-ending match with the Panthers is set for 3 p.m. in Greenville, Illinois.
