Sabercats Lose Lead to Cougar Comeback

WATERTOWN, Wis. - In a seven-goal thriller, the Sabercats conceded their two-goal halftime lead to the Cougars of Concordia-Chicago, giving up three second-half goals on a warm afternoon in Watertown. The loss marked the first time that the Sabercats have fallen to the Cougars at home.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 3-4 Cougars
  • Location: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Attendance: 40
  • Both teams: now 1-2

How it Happened

  • 7' - After a tangle in the box resulting in a Cougar penalty kick, Roberto Avila calmly inserted the ball into the lower right corner to give the Cougars the edge (0-1)
  • 11' - Brett Cournoyer evened the odds within five minutes. After Kevin Risma's assertive run down the right-hand side, the rookie crossed it into Cournoyer, who slammed the ball into the side-netting from the far post (1-1)
  • 23' - Wira Wama continued his scoring ways with a well-placed shot from just inside the penalty area. After the ball fell kindly for the Islander, he took a touch to his left and shot low to the right side (2-1)
  • 41' - Daniel Kroll cashed in for his first goal in Sabercat colors, as he ran on to a through ball and finished with conviction into the lower left hand corner past the oncoming keeper (3-1)
  • 48' - Right away in the second half, the Cougars announced their resolve. After a corner kick was knocked loose near the goal, Peter Kass knocked it in (2-3)
  • 51' - Not five minutes later, and the Cougars leveled the score. It was from yet another set piece, and this time it was from a free kick from 30 yards out that sneaked into the lower corner. Just like that, the Cougars had pulled even (3-3)
  • 61' - In just 13 short minutes, the Cougars had done all the damage necessary. After a long ball around the Sabercat back line put the hosts on the back foot, Gibril Jobe dribbled 40 yards into the Sabercat penalty area to score the eventual game-winner (4-3)

From Coach Jeff Pill

"It's obviously disappointing to give up a two-goal lead, especially in the way we gave up the goals. We played a very good first half and moved the ball well, and great job for Concordia to come back and take the game after being two goals down. I think it's a learning experience for us, and we are looking forward to hosting Edgewood on Saturday."
