Parents' Day Win: Sabercats Conquer Eagles in NCCAA Clash

WATERTOWN, Wis. - In an electric matchup on Parents' Day, the Sabercats' torrid first half earned them four goals in a 4-1 win. Four different players cashed in for the goals, as MBU took home a decisive NCCAA regional win over the Eagles of Faith Baptist Bible College.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 4-1 Eagles
  • Location: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Contest: Parents' Day, NCCAA Regional
  • Attendance: 174

How it Happened

  • 8' - Brett Cournoyer scored the first goal after the Sabercats threatened to score in the opening minutes. Cournoyer collected a Nathan Akers pass, beat a defender, and slotted it into the bottom right corner (1-0)
  • 10' - The second came just two minutes later, courtesy of the head of Kevin Risma, who nodded home after Nathan Akers flicked on a corner kick from Walters (2-0)
  • 18' - Enter North Carolina, as N.C. natives Austin DeAngelo and Tyler Nelson combined for the third. DeAngelo's cross was met at the back post by Nelson, who used his chest to place the ball into the bottom corner. The creative finish was Nelson's first goal in Sabercat colors (3-0)
  • 26' - Nathan Akers turned from assistant to finisher for the final goal, as he received the ball at the top of the box, turned sharply, and fired low into the left corner to increase the lead to four after a well-worked buildup from the Sabercats (4-0)
  • 80' - The Eagles could not find an answer until late on, when Josh Bray fired across the goal to the lower right-hand corner after running onto a through ball (4-1)

From Coach Pill

"I thought we played very well as a team today, and we showed better commitment than we have shown in recent games. We were very sharp in the first half and productive with our possession, and were strong defensively so that we were able to hold on to our early lead. This was a good team effort for us, and we look forward to continuing the momentum against Providence on Monday."
