Sabercats Topped by Scarlet Hawks in the Windy City

CHICAGO - In a fixture that has been decided by one goal in each of the prior meetings, the Scarlet Hawks of IIT broke the trend by handing the Sabercats a 7-1 loss on a sunny evening in Chicago. IIT netted four goals in a three-and-a-half-minute span to cap off their game in style.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 1-7 Scarlet Hawks
  • Venue: Stuart Field
  • Attendance: 40
  • Sabercats: now 2-9, Scarlet Hawks: now 5-6

How it Happened

  • 25' - After making a staunch goal-line stand five minutes prior, Andrew Taylor made a breakaway save that deflected straight to a well-placed IIT player, who placed the ball into the gaping net to give the hosts the advantage (0-1)
  • 35' - Nathan Akers promptly tied the game at one when the Sabercats capitalized on a loose ball in their attacking half. Akers stole into the IIT box and finished low to the left side netting to even the odds (1-1)
  • 36' - The Scarlet Hawks took no time to reply, as they promptly drew a penalty kick for their chance to regain the lead. Santiago Bartolome made no mistake from the spot, as he finished low and hard to give IIT the lead (1-2)
  • 60' - The hosts revisited the penalty spot just before the hour mark, and Bartolome was the man of choice again. Bartolome promptly gave IIT a two-goal cushion with a carbon-copy of his first penalty kick (1-3)
  • 83' - The next goal for the hosts came in the 83rd minute, when a well-worked counter-attack ended with a neat finish from Noah Griffith, who received his pass from the goal-scorer Bartolome (1-4)
  • 85' - Gutierrez Coronel was next on the scoresheet, and would notch a brace before the final whistle (1-5)
  • 86' - Coronel wasted no time in netting his second, as he finished neatly from just inside the penalty area (1-6)
  • 87' - The Scarlet Hawks capped off their barrage courtesy of Brandon Bortei-Doku, who put the final exclamation point on a high-scoring day for the hosts (1-7)

From Coach Pill

"Halfway through the second half we were pushing people forward trying to even the game, then it seemed everything that [IIT] shot went in. We were unfortunate to have two penalties called against us, but we give credit to IIT for finishing their chances. We have positives to take away, as we got a lot of young guys some good experience. Andy Taylor played out of his mind and Nathan Campbell probably had his best game yet."
