Eagles' First Half Onslaught Tames Sabercats

WATERTOWN, Wis. - After conceding two early goals, the Sabercats could not overcome a five-goal first half, as they fell 6-2 to the Eagles of Edgewood College on a rainy Saturday morning. Wira Wama scored two goals in the second half as the Sabercats outscored the Eagles in the second act, making the game a definitive "tale of two halves". Wama's brace brought his tally to 37 career goals, which is the third-best in Maranatha Men's Soccer history.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 2-6 Edgewood
  • Location: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Attendance: 70
  • Records: Sabercats now 1-3, Eagles now 3-1

How it Happened

  • 1' - Not more than 60 seconds into the game, the Eagles jumped out to the lead after flanking the Sabercats down the right side and crossing the ball into a waiting striker (0-1)
  • 3' - Two minutes later marked the second goal, as a cross was knocked loose inside the penalty area. Edgewood's Nicholas Bilodeau was quicker than anyone to get to the loose ball, and slammed it into the back of the net from six yards out (0-2)
  • 21' - The Sabercats still could not stop the efficient Eagle attack, as an Edgewood striker dribbled around an oncoming Randal Larson and finished into the gaping net (0-3)
  • 31' - The fourth came ten minutes later, as Larson found himself one-on-one with an Eagle forward, who eventually finished into the lower corner (0-4)
  • 44' - The fifth came in spectacular fashion, as Edgewood's Henry Simon struck a bomb of a free kick from a full 35 yards out that sailed into the upper right-hand corner (0-5)
  • 52' - The game looked to be beyond any hope of Sabercat control, as Edgewood exploited loose Sabercat marking to make it a half-dozen (0-6)
  • 53' - Just 40 seconds later, and Wira Wama put up a consolation goal for the Sabercats, as the quick-footed midfielder sprung into the Eagle box and finished authoritatively into the lower corner (1-6)
  • 82' - Wama moved into the top three all-time scorers with a long range effort just eight minutes from time. After Edgewood's goalkeeper saw his clearance skip to the feet of Wama, Wama pulled the trigger from distance to finish past the recovering goalkeeper (2-6)

From Coach Pill

"Although the scoreline would indicate that we have a lot to be depressed about, how we were playing indicated otherwise. I was pleased with how we moved the ball, and we were committed to playing quickly and simply. We were caught early in transition, but steadily improved as the game wore on. Edgewood is a very good team that can play quickly and effectively, so our progress during the game gave us signs of encouragement in the weeks to come."
