Sabercats Roll for Second Straight

WATERTOWN, Wis. - For the second straight game, the Sabercats made the most of a fast start to win a decisive NCCAA regional matchup. This time, they defeated the Providence University College Pilots by a 3-1 scoreline. The win could be an important one in the NCCAA postseason regional scheme.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 3-1 Pilots
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Attendance: 85
  • Sabercats: 4-12, 3-3 in NCCAA play

How it Happened

  • 12' - Caleb Walters opened the scoring with a trademark finish from the top of the box. After Brett Cournoyer cut the ball back to Walters, the Ohio native took a touch to his right and shot low to the left to put the Sabercats ahead (1-0)
  • 15' - Cournoyer supplemented his assist with a goal of his own, as he bravely met a well-placed Tyler Nelson cross to bury a header past the oncoming goalkeeper (2-0)
  • 64' - Against the run of play in the second half, Asa St. Lawrence lofted a through ball behind the Providence defenders, and Kevin Risma was quicker than anyone to it. Just inside the Providence box, Risma bravely shot low and to the right whilst jumping over the goalkeeper to give the Sabercats a cushion (3-0)
  • 67' - The cushion would be put to use, as Providence quickly answered by scoring straight from the corner arc. Herby Magny's left-footed set piece bent into the top corner and the Pilots had a "lifeline" (3-1)
  • The Sabercats weathered the storm, however, as Randal Larson made a big save to deny a Pilot rally with just two minutes left on the clock
