Seven Straight in Fond du Lac: Sabercats Best Sabres

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Sabercats further extended their winning streak in Fond du Lac, as they defeated the Marian University Sabres in four sets. Alison Renz continued her dominant play in superlative fashion by posting 24 kills to lead the Sabercats to their seventh consecutive win.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 3-1 Sabres
  • Venue: Sadoff Gymnasium, Marian University
  • Attendance: 101
  • Sabercats: now 12-4, Sabres: now 4-16

How it Happened

  • MBU 25-17 MU
    • The Sabercats were trailing for the majority of the first set, as they trailed the Sabres 16-19 in what turned out to be a barn-burning first set. Renz and the Sabercats ground out the set point by point, however, and managed to take away a 25-22 win as they combined a quick defense with an unpredictable attack. (1-0)
  • MBU 25-13 MU
    • The second set was a different story entirely, as the Sabercats led wire to wire to take home the win by a dozen points. This time, it was the misfiring Sabres who made the set harder than it could have been, as the hosts registered eight errors through a stretch of 11 points for the Sabercats. MBU was in prime position to continue their streak of undefeated sets. (2-0)
  • MBU 22-25 MU
    • It was not to be, however, as the hosts stated their winning intentions early on when they launched themselves into a 10-4 lead. The Sabercats answered the Sabres' opening statement by concocting a 9-3 run of their own to tie the match at 13, but some late miscues gave the Sabres an unbeatable advantage. After the third set, Marian had secured a 25-22 win to extend the match. (2-1)
  • MBU 25-12 MU
    • The Sabercats ended the match in the fourth set, however, as they halted the Sabres momentum to close out the match in emphatic fashion. Madeline Thompson led the way in the kills department for the Sabercats in the early goings, and more errors haunted the Sabres. After posting a 16-4 lead, Renz helped the Sabercats to coast across the finish line, and Alexis Johnson - who posted 15 kills on the night - closed out the match with the decisive kill. (3-1)

Side Notes

  • Renz's 24-kills tally was her career best
  • Julia Gunst and Karley Johnson combined for 36 assists
  • The win was the fifth straight win away from home for the Sabercats
