Sabercats Finish Perfect at Home With Finlandia Sweep

WATERTOWN, Wis. - In an all-AD3I Matchup, the Sabercats concluded a perfect streak on their home floor as they bested the Finlandia University Lions in straight sets. This was the final matchup of the regular season for the Sabercats, who finish the season with six wins on the home floor without dropping a set.

Seniors Julia Gunst, Alison Renz, and Rachel Wells saw the MBU Gymnasium for the last time as players, and were able to go out on a winning note.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 3-0 Lions
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Attendance: 224
  • Sabercats: finish the regular season at 19-5

How it Happened

  • MBU 25-7 FINNU
    • The Sabercats were nothing less than balanced during the opening set, as a variety of contributors created early momentum. Julia Gunst and Karley Johnson dictated a precise attack, and a relentless defense helped Sabercats cruise out to an early lead that they would not relinquish. With the set shifted firmly in their favor, the Sabercats held the Lions to single-digit points to win 25-7 (1-0)
  • MBU 25-19 FINNU
    • Set two saw the Lions earn more points than they did in the first set, but the Sabercats still led from start to finish to take the two-set advantage. Alison Renz, Alexis Johnson and Madeline Thompson were all dominant at the net to lead the Sabercats' attack while Katie Bender kept the defense on point early in the set to make the Lions' later attempt at a comeback all the more improbable. (2-0)
  • MBU 25-19 FINNU
    • After their wire-to-wire opening sets, the Sabercats always looked the favorite to win the final set. Soon, the suspicion became a reality, but not after the Lions gave the Sabercats a run for their proverbial money. After a mid-set tie, the Sabercats found a rhythm thanks – in part – to the adroit net play of Thompson, who picked up key kills at key times to extend the Sabercats' lead to five as the set wound down. After the Lions mounted a small comeback to come within two points, the Sabercats closed the set out in style with a 5-1 run to win 25-19 (3-0)
