Johnson Grabs Double Weekly Honor

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Kelsey Johnson was virtually unstoppable last week, and the governing bodies in the NCCAA and NCAA took notice.

The sophomore's triple-double, 20-plus points per game and 12 rebounds per game earned her Student-Athlete of the Week honors for both the National Christian College Athletic Association and the Association of Division III Independents.

And last week's performances were just a superlative snapshot of the sophomore's consistency throughout the season so far.

Johnson, a forward from Stephenson, Michigan, notched her first career triple-double in a Parents' Day win over Great Lakes Christian College last Saturday. Johnson registered 21 points, 16 rebounds, and 13 assists to lead the Sabercats to a 77-56 win, and the victory moved the Sabercats to 6-1 this year against NCCAA DII opponents.

Before that, Johnson recorded a career-high 23 points against Lincoln Christian (NCCAA DI) in a narrow loss on the road. In that 53-59 defeat, she was just one rebound shy of a double-double. In the remaining game last week, a 67-54 win over Grace Bible College, Johnson racked up 17 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists to lead the Sabercats to a season sweep of the Lady Tigers.

All in all, the sophomore averaged 20.3 points per game while shooting 46.8 percent from the field. Johnson averaged 12 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game. So far this season, Johnson has recorded double-digit points in every game except one, and in that on exception, she still managed 9 points and 10 rebounds - just one point shy of what would now be her ninth double-double of the year.

Johnson and the Sabercats have two remaining contests before entering the 2018 NCCAA North Regional Tournament hosted by Faith Baptist Bible College.
