Hernandez, Wama Named Student-Athletes of the Week

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Sabercat midfielders Alison Hernandez and Wira Wama were named as NCCAA Student-Athletes of the week, the NCCAA announced Tuesday.

Both players produced noteworthy performances at the 2016 NCCAA North Regional Tournaments, as they both put themselves on the scoresheet and scored important goals over the weekend in Ankeny, Iowa.

Hernandez scored the eventual game-winning goal with her head from an Audrey Risma corner kick, and produced an encore performance later in the game by nodding in a free kick from Risma. Hernandez's brace helped the Sabercats defeat the Providence University College Pilots 6-0 in the regional championship game.

Hernandez was named to the North All-Region team, and has contributed six goals and two assists so far this season.

Wama scored a dramatic game-winner against the Providence University College Pilots when he stunned everyone with an 18-yard laser that found the top-right corner with just four seconds left on the clock to win the game in overtime.

Wama would go on to have an impact performance against the North Central University Rams in the semifinal, but the closest the Papua New Guinean came to repeating his feat from Thursday was a shot that hit the post in the dying minutes of the game. Wama was named as the 2016 North Region Player of the Year, and finished his MBU career in that semifinal loss to North Central. Wama finishes his career with 43 goals - the second-best tally in MBU Men's Soccer history.
