Late Muskie Surge Steals Draw in Watertown

WATERTOWN, Wis. - In a hard-fought battle between the Sabercats and the Muskies, Lakeland denied Maranatha the win by scoring twice in the final 13 minutes. Audrey Risma scored one and set up two as the Sabercats showed improvement in the attack, but their efforts were not enough to earn all three points and a potential second straight win. After a thrilling 110 minutes of hard-fought action, the two teams emerged with a draw.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 3-3 Muskies (OT)
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Attendance: 76
  • Sabercats: now 2-7-1, Muskies: now 2-9-1

How it Happened

  • 12' - The visitors drew first blood early on, as the Muskies capitalized on a rebound in the box for a close-range finish and the go-ahead goal. Rachel Hasko was the one who applied the final touches (0-1)
  • 25' - Audrey Risma soon had the answer, as the senior collected the ball from Bethany Wright and fired into the corner from 25 yards out to equalize in spectacular fashion (1-1)
  • 26' - Risma turned from scorer to provider just one minute later when she whipped in a corner kick to the back post to Alison Hernandez, who nodded the ball in emphatically at the back post for another crowd-pleasing goal (2-1)
  • 46' - Not even a minute into the second half, Risma's well-hit shot was saved by the Muskie goalkeeper, but Hannah McCutcheon was alert to pounce on the rebound and tuck the ball into a waiting net to give the Sabercats insurance (3-1)
  • 78' - 12 minutes from time, Abby Mauer made her first of two significant moves that would influence the game late on for the Muskies. The first was a well-placed shot from the top of the box that skipped into the bottom corner (3-2)
  • 86' - Mauer's second action was a well-struck corner kick that found the head of Meagan Simmons, who mimicked Hernandez's finish with a headed goal of her own (3-3)
  • Neither side had a quality chance in the two extra time periods, and the bonus 20 minutes did not prove enough to separate the two sides on the day
  • With the tie, the all-time series moves to 6-18-1 in favor of the Muskies

From Coach Anderson

"What a thriller! I thought we created some really good chances today with our speed and mobility up top. I also enjoyed seeing our players perform in a really intense environment. Their efforts and focus brought us back into the game when momentum seemed to have swung totally in Lakeland's favor. This experience will be very valuable come tournament time."
