Women's Basketball 2022-23 Season Preview

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- The Maranatha Women's Basketball Team returns to the floor tomorrow night with a new roster, a new coach, and a new perspective on what's ahead for the 2022-23 season.

After a prolific stint at Tri-City Christian Academy in Chandler, Arizona, Coach Paul Brown takes the reigns from Coach Clayton Morrison, stepping in to the massive shoes to coach the program for the first time this season. Coach Brown and the team have been preparing since October 15, and they look forward to tomorrow and the chance to gauge how far they've come since then. Incomplete roster and all.

"We are taking each day at a time," Brown said. "I'm encouraged that we're young, and I'm thankful for the upperclassmen that I've had that have shown great leadership and high energy when it comes to practices. I'm thankful for the weeks we've had, but right now we're drinking from the fire hose. It will take a while to learn the system, so what I'm teaching them really is brand new. These things take time.

"So seeing all these underclassmen... whatever they learn this year is a building block for next year. I'm excited for these young freshmen. We're going to learn together. They're learning the game, and I'm learning about them individually. Those are the keys: learn and grow."

With the adjustments in mind, Coach Brown views the first stretch of four games as sort of an extended preseason. He still doesn't have his complete roster, which includes members of the Women's Volleyball Team. For Brown, it's all part of the learning process.

"From now until Thanksgiving and the first five games are all about learning," said Brown. "The challenge, of course, is finding why you do certain things in the system. We're not as deep as I'd like us to be but we have people that can come off the bench and give us minutes. I know the first five games are a learning curve, but I'm not going down without a fight."
