Sabercats Lose Early Lead in Season-Opener

WATERTOWNWis. --- The Sabercats were sharp in their season-opening matchup against the Lawrence University Vikings despite rostering just nine players. Hanna Glaze tied her career-best 18 points, but the Sabercats were eventually undone by a Lawrence comeback, falling 51-61 to open the season.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 51-61 Vikings
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Attendance: 165
  • Sabercats: now 0-1, Vikings: now 1-0

How it Happened

  • 1st Quarter
    • Early points from the freshman Hannah May put the Sabercats out to an early six-point lead (9-3)
    • The scoring was hindered from that point on in the first quarter for the Sabercats, as the Vikings pulled to within one point entering the final minute (11-10)
    • Three late points was the answer for the Sabercats, who held a 14-10 lead going into the second quarter
  • 2nd Quarter
    • The Sabercats settled back into their rhythm to start the second quarter, as they opened with a 4-2 exchange to increase their lead to six and force the Vikings to call a timeout (18-12)
    • Hanna Glaze's 11 first-half points led the Sasbercats through the remainder of the half. The Idaho native would notch 11 points through the opening half and was accompanied by Harmony Bailey, who added seven points of her own.
    • As the teams headed into the locker room, the Sabercats held a seven-point advantage over the Vikings (28-21)
  • 3rd Quarter
    • The Vikings came out of the locker room with a chip on their shoulder, as a 13-5 run gave them their first lead of the night (33-34)
    • The Sabercats seemed fatigued during the closing stages of the third quarter, as they were forced to run with only two substitutes.
    • Lawrence was keen to take advantage of some tired mistakes from the Sabercats, and managed to maintain the lead in the following minutes.
    • Glaze gave the Sabercats their first lead of the night with a three-pointer with just over a minute on the clock, but an answering two from Lawrence restored the lead (44-45)
    • It was Glaze against Lawrence again in the final seconds, as Glaze's jumper was quickly answered by a Viking trifecta. The visitors had withstood the Sabercats' pressure to hold the two-point lead going into the fourth quarter (46-48)
  • 4th Quarter
    • The Vikings eventually stormed on with a 13-5 final quarter to increase their newfound lead to 10 as the final horn sounded.
    • Sloppy possession late on plagued the Sabercats, as their 34 turnovers throughout the game was evidence of their waning energy.
    • Hanna Glaze knocked down a jumper to make it a two-point game with six minutes on the clock, but the scoring would end there for MBU.
    • Lawrence was strong in the paint late on, and scored eight unanswered points over the final six minutes to close the game out (51-61)
    • Emilee Hansel had a career-high 14 rebounds on the night.
    • Glaze career-high-matching 18 points was supplemented with 17 from May, who was one board shy of a debut double-double
