Sabercats' Huge Third Captures AD3I Win over Scarlet Hawks

CHICAGO --- In a low-scoring contest, the Sabercats posted a 14-point away win over the IIT Scarlet Hawks in the Windy City. MBU pulled away with a 32-18 effort in the second half after going into the break at a 20-20 tie.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 52-38 Scarlet Hawks
  • Venue: Keating Sports Center; Illinois Institute of Technology
  • Attendance: 87
  • Sabercats: now 6-6, Scarlet Hawks: now 0-11

How it Happened

  • 1st Half
  • The Sabercats' shooting woes continued in the early goings, as they struggled to get momentum in the opening quarter, hitting just three of their 22 shots to score only seven points.
  • The Scarlet Hawks managed to post 11 points in the first quarter to take a four-point lead going into the second act. (7-11)
  • Hannah May sparked the offense in the second 10 minutes for MBU. The rookie showed her prowess from beyond the arc and posted eight points total to help the Sabercats tie the game at 20 entering the break. (20-20)
  • 2nd Half
  • The Sabercats went off in the third quarter, scoring 28 points to the Scarlet Hawks' two in the 10-minute stretch. 13 of those points came from the free throw line as the Sabercats punished the Scarlet Hawks for getting into foul trouble.
  • Alexis Johnson led MBU to get the second half going. Johnson grabbed seven points, five of which came from the stripe. MBU went into the fourth quarter with an unprecedented 26-point cushion. (48-22)
  • Although the Scarlet Hawks ended strongly with a 16-point fourth quarter, the damage done by the Sabercats in the third proved to be too much for the hosts to handle. MBU went all the way through their bench to cap off the win.
  • Poor finishing ultimately bookended the game for the Sabercats, and while their effort was well-rounded, they struggled once again from the field in the final quarter. Harmony Bailey scored the only points for the Sabercats, as the freshman's four points helped the Sabercats finish the road win. (52-38)
