Sabercats' Second-Half Surge Conquers Mount Mary
WATERTOWN, Wis. --- The Sabercats utilized the momentum of a second-half push and held off a late-game charge to top the Mount Mary Blue Angels 60-48 after the teams emerged from an off-kilter first half. Hanna Glaze notched 18 points in the all-AD3I contest while Alexis Johnson logged 15 points and nine boards.
With the win, the Sabercats are now 10-10 on the season. Mount Mary takes the loss to fall to 5-12 for 2016-17.
Turnovers reigned in the first quarter, as both teams had to get over a sluggish start. The two teams combined for 24 turnovers and just 17 points in the opening 10 minutes. Two late free throws from Mount Mary's Jess Runge put the visitors ahead by one going into the second quarter. (8-9)
The two teams soon settled into a rhythm, and they combined for a much sharper second quarter. The Blue Angels started to gain a sizeable lead early on, but MBU - who shot 50 percent from the field in the second quarter - cut into the visitors' momentum. Harmony Bailey and Alexis Johnson both logged five points while Hanna Glaze contributed four. Both teams had apparently shaken off the first-quarter dust, and the Blue Angels held a two-point lead entering halftime. (27-29)
The next 15 minutes of the game was all about MBU.
To fuel the decisive run, the Sabercats missed just four attempts from the field in the third quarter, as Johnson and Glaze led the scoring once again with a half-dozen points each. Katie Bender tied the game at 32 after two and a half minutes, then it was all one-way traffic as the Sabercats unleashed a 26-7 run that took them into the fourth quarter.
The Sabercats supplemented their dangerous and on-point attack with stingy defense and clean possession - MBU limited Mount Mary to shooting less than 25 percent from the field in the third quarter alone while coughing the ball up just five times.
When the game seemed to be heading to an easy MBU win, the Blue Angels produced somewhat of a late scare when they concocted a 9-0 run in the middle stages of the fourth quarter. However, the Sabercats showed characteristic resolve and forced Mount Mary into off-the-mark shooting down the stretch to help seal out the imminent win.
Glaze rounded off her 18-point performance with eight points in the final quarter.
Bailey led the bench with nine points. Both Alexis and Kelsey Johnson added nine rebounds while Amanda Rodriguez notched seven.
The game was the 31st contest between the two teams, and MBU leads the all-time series 23-8.
The Sabercats will look next to the Lakes of Great Lakes Christian College and the first meeting between the two teams in program history. Tip-off is at 3:00 p.m. Saturday on the MBU campus.
