Lakers Stay Steady over Sabercats

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- The Lakers of Silver Lake College stayed consistent to punish the Sabercats' miscues and steadily increase their lead to a 22-point advantage as the final horn sounded. Alexis Johnson was the only Sabercat in double figures, as the junior scored 10 points on the night and added seven rebounds.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 46-68 Lakers
  • Venue: MBU Gymnasium
  • Attendance: 41
  • Sabercats: now 2-3, Lakers: now 8-3

How it Happened

  • 1st Half
    • The two teams were evenly matched through most of the first quarter, as they stayed close once the rhythm of the contest was established.
    • Alexis Johnson came out with four points to lead the Sabercats, as five different players contributed to the scoreline. Amanda Rodriguez also helped the Sabercats get off on the right foot by scoring the first two points and setting up Johnson for MBU's second bucket.
    • A late push by the Lakers swung the momentum in their favor, as seven unanswered points late on gave the visitors a seven-point lead after the opening 10 minutes. (12-19)
    • Glaze upped her tally to eight with six early points in the second quarter to help the Sabercats level the game at 21 in the early goings, but the Lakers' persistent shooting paid off as they repeated their feat from the first quarter by posting a late run that once again left them with a seven-point advantage. (24-31)
  • 2nd Half
    • The Lakers kept their advantage intact in the early stages of a high-scoring third quarter. Hannah May knocked in a three off the glass to pull the Sabercats to within five, but that was the closest the home team came, as they began to battle careless turnovers through the middle stages of the third act.
    • After conceding 14 early points, the Sabercats' defense held the Lakers scoreless in the middle stages, but the offense was unable to capitalize on their chances as the visitors maintained a double-digit lead.
    • A three-point play from Katie Bender reduced the lead to seven with less than two minutes on the clock in the third, but the Lakers edged back out to a 14-point lead with a bucket that beat the buzzer. (40-54)
    • From then on out, the Lakers never looked back, as they extended their lead to 20 points and forced the Sabercats to call a timeout with five minutes on the board.
