Déjà vu: Sabercats Win by Two in the Final Minute

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. --- On a frigid day in Minnesota, the Sabercats emerged victorious over the Storm of Crown College by a score of 66-64 in what was a definitive "game of two halves". Alexis Johnson scored 20 points to lead MBU while Hanna Glaze posted 17 points to cap off a memorable comeback for the Blue and Gold.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 66-64 Storm
  • Venue: Crown College; St. Bonifacius, Minn.
  • Attendance: 52
  • Sabercats: now 5-5, Storm: now 0-9

How it Happened

  • 1st Half
  • The first half scoreline predicted a relatively comfortable win for the Storm, as they would eventually hold a 10-point lead after the first 20 minutes.
  • Alexis Johnson converted the first six points for the Sabercats to give them a 6-4 lead, but the Storm fought back to post an 8-2 run to end the opening 10 minutes, taking a four-point lead entering the second quarter. (13-17)
  • Throughout the second quarter, the Storm steadily pulled ahead, as they answered the Sabercats' opening buckets with ease. Crown was especially capable from three-point range, as 12 of their 22 points came from downtown. A 13-4 run by the hosts at the start of the second quarter launched the momentum squarely in their favor, and they increased their lead to double digits entering halftime. (29-39)
  • Hanna Glaze and Alexis Johnson led the Sabercats with six points each in the first half.
  • The Sabercats were 5-10 in each of the first two quarters, as they shot 50 percent from the field in the opening half.
  • 2nd Half
  • The Sabercats created more opportunities to score in the third quarter, and they began their 20-minute comeback after allowing the Storm to build a 29-43 lead - their largest of the night.
  • Karley Johnson and Harmony Bailey made their contributions to the comeback with three and four points, respectively, and a Hanna Glaze layup reduced the Storm's lead to single digits with just under five minutes to play in the third.
  • Four more points from Alexis Johnson inside the final two minutes of the quarter put the Sabercats within striking distance going into the final act. (47-51)
  • For the second game in a row, the game came down to the final minute. For the most part throughout the fourth quarter, the Sabercats kept the game a two-possession one, and when Alexis Johnson made a layup with 5:43 on the clock, the winner's margin remained three points or less over a thrilling final five minutes.
  • Enter Hanna Glaze, who was clutch at the line for MBU. Inside the final two minutes, Glaze gave the Sabercats their first lead since the first quarter when she knocked down a pair of shots from the line with 1:45 on the clock.
  • After Crown tied it back up from the charity stripe and the two teams traded misses, Glaze drew a foul with just two seconds on the clock. The senior routinely converted the two attempts to put the Sabercats up by two, and the Sabercats defense forced the Storm off the mark with their attempt to tie the game at the death. After a scintillating finish, the Sabercats chalked their second comeback win on the week, and entered Christmas break at 5-5.
