Sabercats Post Committed Comeback Over Regents

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- The Sabercats showed resilience in their 67-65 win over the Regents of Rockford University, as they overcame a 21-point third-quarter defecit to win the game. Alexis Johnson (18 points) and Hanna Glaze (16 points) were the leading scorers on the night.

The Basics

  • Result: Sabercats 67-65
  • Venue: Maranatha Baptist University
  • Attendance: 211
  • Sabercats:now 4-5, Regents, now 3-5

How it Happened

  • 1st Half
  • Rockford hit the ground running on offense and held the Sabercats to just four points through the first five minutes of the first quarter. Quick execution from the Regents forced head coach Clayton Morrison to call a timeout after going down 4-11 with just under five minutes remaining.
  • The Sabercats emerged from that timeout by going on an 8-4 run to end the quarter, which was capped off by a Hannah May three-pointer that brought the Sabercats within three points of the Regents. (12-15)
  • The second quarter saw the Regents jump out with an early 9-3 run in the opening three minutes. Katie Bender stroked in a three to stop the bleeding, and the Sabercats posted a few more points down the stretch, but the Regents still held the advantage within the quarter and took a five-point lead entering the half. (23-28)
  • May led the Sabercats with seven points and six rebounds in the first half.
  • 2nd Half
  • The Regents set the tone for a one-sided third quarter early on. When the Sabercats posted some early points, the Regents answered to stifle the Sabercats' momentum, and pulled out to a 22-6 run throughout the middle of the third quarter to reach the 50-point mark first.
  • The Sabercats would hold the Regents to just one more point in the quarter, as late points from Hannah May and Karley Johnson put the Sabercats 11 points back entering the final act. (40-51)
  • The fourth quarter was back and forth, and the Sabercats began their comeback at around the five-minute mark when Alexis Johnson, Hanna Glaze, and Emilee Hansel combined for six quick points in a thirty-second span to turn the game on its head. (55-59)
  • The Regents ran into foul and turnover trouble, and the Sabercats capitalized as Glaze and Alexis Johnson led the charge to put the Regents under pressure and to set up a riveting final few minutes.
  • Glaze finally tied the game at 61 from the line with just under 2:30 left. The Regents answered with three points, then Kelsey Johnson nailed a three-pointer with just over a minute left to tie it back up at 64.
  • Following her sister Kelsey's bucket, a well-executed Sabercat play allowed Alexis Johnson to drive and lay it in, and an ensuing steal from Glaze, a foul, and a Glaze free throw put the Sabercats ahead 67-65, bringing the crowd to its feet.
  • With the shot clock dead, the Regents could not convert their final opportunity, and saw their 21-point lead from the third quarter ultimately fall to a staunch Sabercat comeback. (67-65)
