Sabercats Hold on Over Lincoln Christian on Parents' Day

WATERTOWN, Wis. --- The Sabercats posted their second win this season over the Lincoln Christian University Red Lions by a score of 59-52 on Saturday in front of a Parents' Day crowd. Hanna Glaze led MBU with 25 points on the day.

Glaze was difficult to stop in the first quarter, as the senior led a 17-point effort with 11 points in the first 10 minutes for the Sabercats. It turned into a two-player show, as Glaze was backed up by five points from Hannah May, making it a senior/freshman act in the opening period.

Glaze shot 6-7 for the half and did not miss any of her three shots from downtown.

Both teams utilized the deep shot to open the game, and MBU led by five to end the first quarter. (17-12)

That five-point lead would hold until halftime, as MBU kept LCU under pressure in the first quarter with a high press. The defensive momentum helped to keep them ahead by five to 10 points throughout the better part of the second quarter.

Glaze continued her contributions in the second act, as the senior would post four more points. Kelsey Johnson came in off the bench and contributed seven points in the first half, and the Sabercats shot over 45 percent from the field.

The Sabercats were sharp with their ball movement as they limited their turnovers to just seven in the first half. (28-23)

The Red Lions were rejuvenated on defense to begin the third quarter, as they went on a 6-0 run to take the lead just three and a half minutes into the second half.

The lead then changed hands multiple times, as MBU and LCU traded two-point shots. A highlight moment came from Katie Bender, who in one motion made an athletic dive going out of bounds and passed it to Hanna Glaze, who knocked down a jumper to restore the Sabercats' lead at the halfway mark of the period. Bender followed that assist up with a nearly coast-to-coast layup to tie the game at 34 with two minutes left in the quarter.

Hanna Glaze stole the show for the second half when she beat the buzzer from just over the timeline. Glaze launched her shot on the run and knocked it in off the glass to give MBU a one-point advantage going into the final act. (40-39)

Alexis Johnson found her rhythm in the third quarter and contributed five points.

The final quarter held an intense level of play, as both teams were relentless in their pursuit of the win. Bender and Kelsey Johnson both added three points early on to jumpstart the Sabercats' offense, but the Red Lions stayed close.

With the game deadlocked at 49 with four minutes to play, Kelsey Johnson made a short-range jumper, but LCU restored the lead by knocking down a three-pointer. MBU then had difficulty creating chances and began to fight turnovers, but pulled it back when Glaze and Kelsey Johnson knocked down short-range jumpers to give the Sabercats a three-point lead going into the final minute.

A key steal from Alexis Johnson led to Glaze making a return trip to the line, and the senior cooly obliged by knocked down a pair of shots to give the Sabercats a six-point lead. Glaze and Bender combined for four points from the charity stripe to help seal the seven-point win on Parents' Day.

This marks the conclusion of the regular season for the Sabercats, and they will await their seeding for next weekend's NCCAA North Regional Tournament (powered by Culver's).

Play for a four-team women's bracket will start Friday, Feb. 24 on the campus of Maranatha Baptist University.
