Morrisons, Maranatha, Milestones
WATERTOWN, Wis. -- At last week's post-season Athletic Awards Assembly, head coach Clayton Morrison named the final awards and reflected on the 2021-22 season - a milestone season for him, and his daughter Callie - as both Maranatha mainstays wrapped up their final season.
It was the end of a glittering four-year career for Callie and the final act of a 29-season tenure at the head of Maranatha Women's Basketball for Coach Mo.
Callie concluded her career by earning the Game Plan 4 LIFE/Dr. Marti MacCullough Award - the highest honor for a student-athlete in NCCAA DII Women's Basketball.
After a challenging season in which they finished 7-17, the team was just one bucket shy of capturing the 2022 North Region Championship and advancing to the NCCAA DII National Tournament for the fourth straight time. But it wasn't meant to be. Trinity Bible College scored in the dying seconds to win 66-64. It was Trinity's first-ever regional championship as a program.
Some things stayed the same: Callie earned her fourth consecutive NCCAA North Region selection, as she and Katelyn Morrison paced the Sabercats through the season and the postseason. Both were named as all-region selections and the Sabercats seemed to play their best basketball just when it mattered most.
But some things changed: Coach Mo wouldn't be the head coach after this year, and the Sabercats did not appear at Nationals - just the fifth time since 2000 that that has happened.
