Opening Day Letters

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Today should've been opening day.

At a time where words can't seem to curb the unprecedented frustration of having a season cancelled and hours of preparation neutralized, two of the people that have been most affected by the cancellations due to the coronavirus have words of encouragement and empathy for their student-athletes.

Coach Rob Thompson ("Coach T") and Coach Gary Garrison share their thoughts to the team on this, the scheduled opening day of the 2020 spring seasons.

Men,

What a sad day this is. I think it is safe to say that we have all had March 20 circled on our calendars. It represents Opening Day 2020 for MBU Sabercats Baseball.

I was so disappointed to learn that our season would be cancelled...like all other college baseball teams in America.  How strange does that sound?  I was very eagerly anticipating the first glimpse of how we would look on the field.  I am comforted in the fact that you men have handled this disappointment in a remarkable way. Thanks for the maturity demonstrated in the midst of great disappointment.  You guys are the best!

I was very excited to see if we played as good as we looked in our new uniforms...I believe we would have.  The good news...we will have new uniforms at this time next year!  Thanks for being such a great group of brothers!  It is a distinct privilege to be your coach!  God bless each one of you men in all you do this Spring and Summer. I look forward to the start of the 2021 season!  GO SABERCATS!

Dear MBU Sabercats Softball team,

Today was to be the start of our 2020 Vision Season! All the hours of training, planning, and preparing since last fall’s “fall-ball” and our in-season training since February 3 was geared towards today...getting on the field in Minnesota with a full team of talented, dedicated players and coaches!

I can only imagine the range of emotions that each one of you have collectively and individually today as well. From those who were to embark on their first season of softball in a Sabercats uniform, to those who were to play in their last season...and then everywhere in between! My heart is heavy for you today. As we often shared in team devotions, not one single day or circumstance has caught God unaware or unprepared! Proverbs 3:5-6, and Philippians 1:6 are just as relevant today as they were on the day we shared them, and the day in which they were written. “Give it to God...and let go, God has our back”!

We are working on our plans for 2021 and looking forward to the day we can toss the ball, swing the bats, and get back together!

Keep your “heads-up”, continue to pray for each other, and most of all PRAISE HIM!
