All-Decade MVP: Derek Wallis

All-Decade MVP: Derek Wallis

WATERTOWN, Wis. -- Maranatha Athletics is pleased to recognize Derek Wallis as the all-decade MVP for Maranatha Men's Volleyball.

Wallis stood out from the crowd in more ways than one. Yes, his attack is what he's known for, but his versatility was noteworthy. While neither the NCCAA nor the AD3I named All-American or All-Independent selections from the sport, we still have the program record books to look to. In the early drafts of the archives, Wallis is at the top in multiple categories even though he only played two seasons, giving him a strong case for the MVP of the young program.

Wallis was a team captain and helped the Sabercats to a Wisconsin Volleyball Conference DIII state title at the club level, and he played a primary role as the team transitioned to the varsity level for the 2018 season. Wallis led the Sabercats to a win in their first-ever varsity match, leading MBU with 19 kills and chalking up 12 digs in a five-set win at Concordia-Wisconsin.

For Wallis, helping build a program and compete at the varsity level was something he won't forget.

"It was a unique experience building a program," Wallis said. "We went from winning our conference championship at the club level to building a program from the bottom up against heavy competition. It was very challenging but very rewarding.

"One significant thing I learned was how to build relationships with my teammates and our opponents. We always made it a point to pray with our opponents after our matches and have conversations with them, no matter how hard the match was. It was cool to reconnect with them the next year and have some of them comment about how unique - in a good way - that was of us! It was something I’ll never forget."
